0. Download Thunderbird

1. Install Thunderbird

2. Configure IMAP/POP access for your email provider
- Did you know? You could even use gmail? enable pop, configure thunderbird

3. Download Enigmail

4. Install Enigmail extension (Tools-->Extensions-->Install)

5. Download GnuPG

6. Install GnuPG

7. Configure Enigmail to use GnuPG
Thunderbird--> Engimail --> Preferences
GnuPG executable path:
Mac: /usr/local/bin/gpg
PC: C:\Program Files\GNU\GnuPG\gpg.exe

8. Create a Key:
Enigmail-->Open PGP Key Management
Generate New Key Pair
- Set Key Size to 4096
- Set your passphrase: What's a passphrase? It's not a pass "word", but a "phrase". Something short that is easy to type and to remember. About 10-15 characters. I suggest a sentance, like: (cheeseismoldy, thecrowstands, creationisdestruction)
- Generate Key
- Upload your public key (keyserver-->Upload Public Keys)

9. Export Key, Burn to Disc
Thunderbird-->OpenPGP-->Key Management
Select your key in the Account/User ID window
File-->Export Key to File-->OK
Burn this file onto a CD for safe keeping

10. Search for your Friend's Keys
Thunderbird-->OpenPGP-->Key Management
Keyserver-->Search for Keys
Select the key to import... Repeat

11. Choose your Default Options
Tools-->Account Settings-->OpenPGP Security
Check Enable OpenPGP Support
Check Use email address of this identity to identify the OpenPGP key
Uncheck Sign non-encrypt (tell non-encrypters of your key?)
Check Sign encrypt (always sign your encrypted mail)
Uncheck Encrypt by default (in a perfect world...)

12. Always encrypt to Friends with Encryption
Enigmail-->Edit Per-Recipient Rules
Create OpenPGP rule from Address
Action: Use the following OpenPGP Keys (your friend)
Signing: Always -- Encryption: Always



Save yourself. Encrypt your mail. Don't use corporate mail servers. Don't send mail at work unless it's encrypted and on your own account. Stay safe. You have been granted the right to privacy. Exercising it is up to you.
